For my readers who are going to have oral exams...this is the post for you!
It's Easter vacation and I feel that I have become too lazy, so to avoid that I'm trying my best to be active.
I had a lot to do, so I forgot to post last week, but here I am!
I had an oral exam in English, and the topic was "Love and Friendship". In Norway, we are selected in a random subject, and we get to know about the subject two days before the exam. A day before the exam, we get a topic to talk about. Strange, isn't it?
So I got "Love and Friendship", and I had a lot to say about it, because I already had some thoughts about it. So, I decided to convince my "audience" that love doesn't exist. Believe me, it was tough, but I had some good points. I don't know whether they were fully convinced or not, but I believe so. It's not easy to do so.
I introduced my topic by a quote
"One day Love and Friendship met.
Love asked, "Why do you exist when I already exist?".
Friendship smiled and said,
"To put a smile where you leave tears"
After that I defined love, and used Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet & Opeliah as examples.
The next page, was used to define love. I used Hamlet & Horatio as an example.
I started to tell about the differences between Love and Friendship, and after that I told the story about Romeo & Juliet. I also talked about why Romeo & Juliet was a tragedy. There are 5 factors that make it a tragedy:
- Hero(es)- The story has a main character/characters
- Decision- The main character/characters must take a decision.
- Fatal Flaw (also called the accident of fate)- Something happens that turns the world, of the main character/characters, upside down.
- Fight - There is a fight against something or someone.
- Death- The main character/characters die
As a conclusion, I told them about my views. My sensor (who is my "audience" and will give the grade), who is also the teacher of the subject, International Cooperation, started to laugh when I started to share my thoughts about it.
I said, "Love is a disease which spreads in one’s mind like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder". I also said that love at first sight has nothing to do with the inner beauty/ personality which is the most important factor in love. One has to make adjustments in order to be together, so why can't they just accept each other as they are?
From my personal experiences, I told them about how friends can prevent depression, and how one can feel optimistic just by having good friends. Good friends bring out the best in you, because they always see the positive and bright sides of you.
It's extremely important to show what you have used as sources, because the teachers have to know where you got your ideas from.
I used 12 minutes for the presentation, even though one must only use 10 minutes. After that the sensor and the teacher ask you questions for about 20 minutes, in my case 26 minutes. At first I was a bit nervous, when they started to ask me questions, but after some time, I became more and more confident. They asked me so many questions, and I liked the questions, because they made me think a little. I enjoyed being asked, and they enjoyed my answers, because I had a lot of weird ideas about Love & Friendship. This how an oral exam is, you are allowed to have your own opinions about certain things. An oral exam is like a pleasant conversation about the subject, so for those who haven't had oral exams yet...there is actually no need to worry.
